How Navan Road Club Used Elivar During The 2017 RAS

Congratulations to all those who finished the 2017 RAS, especially the riders from Navan Road Club Andy McGuinness, Stephen Byrne, Gerard Dunne, Fergus Fagan and Johnny Clarke. Elivar proudly supported the team with our Award Winning Sports Nutrition. In this article Dave Elson, Support & Logistics for the team explains how they used Elivar as part of the daily routine.

"It was an unusual Ras for us in that the temperature were extremely high on a number of
stages, reaching up to 26 deg in places in Donegal. On these days we gave the guys the Hydrate Plus sachets. Some riders were taking 6-7 bottles on these days.

At no point in the entire week did any of the riders suffer from cramps or stomach upset. This is quite significant when you consider that it's an 8 day race, with speeds and temperatures high.

The daily routine involved giving the riders a Endure drink and a Hydrate Plus at the start of the race. The logic being that the Endure would keep them fueled for the first part of the race and as the glycogen levels dropped and salts were lost the Hydrate Plus would give energy and prevent cramps. We would then make additional bottles which were predominately Hydrate Plus or just plain water.

About an hour before the race finished the Recover shakes and a light snack/sandwich were made so we could give them to the riders as soon as they returned to the team vehicles after the stage. It was great to have the 5 shakers as we could prepare in advance and hand the drinks to the riders as soon as they sat down.

Navan Road Club - Elivar
One of the riders (who shall remain nameless!) was so exhausted on Thursday that he couldn't swing his leg over the saddle to get off the bike and needed assistance, yet with the recovery drink, a good massage and rest, he got up and did it all again on Friday.

Some of the lads found that as the week went on they ate less and less when on the bike, no desire to eat but they were able to get sufficient energy from the drinks. Orange and Mango was the favorite!

The team got through the event safely and the riders made the time cut every day, and a big part of that was due to the support Elivar gave the team."
